Road traffic accidents claim the lives of 1.2 million people annually, with Saudi Arabia ranking second among Arab countries.
According to Al-Youm (Dammam), Saudi Arabia ranked second among Arab countries after Libya and 23rd globally in terms of increased road traffic fatality rates, with a rate of 27.4 deaths per 100,000 people. Libya recorded 73.4%, while Jordan recorded 26.3%, Oman 25.4%, Algeria 23.8%, Kuwait 18.7%, Qatar 15.2%, Egypt 12.8%, the UAE 10.9%, and Bahrain 8%.
This was based on a World Health Organization report issued in 2015 on global road safety.
The report attributed the high number of accidents to the lack of laws regulating driving behavior and speeding in these countries, as well as poor road planning that does not adequately ensure the safety of road users who are most vulnerable to traffic risks.
