The folks at BMW must find red lights just as annoying as the rest of us; after all, its cars are “the ultimate driving machines,” not the ultimate idle machines. The German automaker will be the first to integrate the EnLighten app, a program designed to communicate with traffic signals, into its cars.
EnLighten is designed to help users avoid red lights and notifies them of impending signal changes. Decreasing red-light stops helps increase gas mileage by reducing the acceleration required to leave a stop light. The app also shows the current color of the traffic signal in real time, and based on the speed of the car and its location compared to the light, it will advise whether to go through the light or stop. The countdown increases safety by giving an exact amount of time until the signal will change.
If the driver wants to turn, activation of the turn signal lets the app know the driver’s intention and in turn it will let the driver know what color the dedicated turn light is (if there is one).
